A few years ago Julie and I decided to start a small business that would be a self-sustaining, philanthropic enterprise. All of its profits will go to charitable endowments— the purpose being to provide on-going, long-term charitable support rather than short-term annual funding. That business is a small wine company called Cotlioure Cellars, and Childhaven is the charity that we plan to support with the proceeds of our first wine, the 2008 Klipsun Vineyard Syrah.
Patrick O'Brian, the author of the twenty volume Aubrey/Maturin series that is near and dear to Julie and me, lived and wrote in Collioure, a small town on the French/Spanish border. The Catalan spelling of Collioure is "Cotlioure".
The image of Collioure on our label was painted by Andre Derain in the summer of 1905 while he and his pal Henri Matisse were chumming around France.

Charity
Childhaven is the only nonprofit organization in King County dedicated to the mission of healing young and vulnerable victims of abuse while breaking the cycle that leads to more hurt and trauma. Childhaven works to protect and treat children age one month through five years and their families. If you have ever visited Childhaven, you know how important and compelling their work is with these kids.
Our family and the broader Barbo family created a special fund at Childhaven called the “Helping Hands Endowment”. The Endowment pays for additional days of Childhaven’s therapeutic care programs for children whom the State no longer supports, in many cases due to the child turning five or upon his or her adoption. Your donations will allow the Endowment to keep the neediest kids in these crucial programs during these important transition periods. As you might imagine, with significant cuts to State and federal budgets, these kids really do need our help. You can find out more about Childhaven at www.childhaven.org.
Our Wine
Our wine is made by Chris Sparkman of Sparkman Cellars in Woodinville, Washington. Chris works with us to shape our wine to the flavor profiles we like--a wine that is both powerful and graceful.
Our grapes come exclusively from Klipsun Vineyard on Red Mountain, one of Washington's most well known and well respected vineyards.
Our first wine is the 2008 Klipsun Syrah. The wine is ripe, rich and supple with loads of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and smoke. Firm tannins frame sweet black fruit.
